THE RC CHAPEL OF ST MARY, CRATHORNE
Roman Catholic Diocese of Middlesborough

Grade II* Listed
ROLE:
Inspecting architect and Project Lead. 2017 to present
THE BUILDING:
St Mary’s Roman Catholic Chapel, built in 1822 by Lord Crathorne, is a building of immense Georgian gothic character, restrained on the exterior but a delight of exquisite rich gothic plasterwork with triple hanging ogee sanctuary arches, cherubs, swags and embellished reredos, and canopied niches and box pews. The interior is architecturally of exceptional value and beauty.
PROJECT SCOPE
Design Philosophy: Achieving ecclesiastical ambience; care, continuity and creativity.
Following the comprehensive quinquennial inspection and under the direction of Monsignor Hogan and Fr Bill Charlton, Chris led the works to reduce risking damp, repair the external walls and pointing, install new heating and lighting internally, new stone central aisle floor internal redecorations and gilding and new external doors and lobby refurbishment.
The works were implemented with Paul Furniss and Sons, specialist heritage builder with Sharon Westcough as the Diocesan advisor.
