THE RC CHURCH OF ST EDWARD KING & CONFESSOR, CLIFFORD
Roman Catholic Diocese of Leeds

Grade II* Listed
ROLE:
Inspecting architect and Project Lead. 2018 to present.
THE BUILDING:
Built in 1848 to bold Romanesque designs by J.A. Hanson before the Restoration of the Roman Catholic Hierarchy for brothers Thomas and Robert Grimston, descendants of the martyred Ralph Grimston and wife Elizabeth (1598 York). Later added to in 1867 by the notable architect G. Goldie with the Anglo-French Tower of dominating size and complexity.
PROJECT SCOPE
Conservation Philosophy: Care and repair, sustainable ‘invisible’ structural intervention.
The recommendations of the quinquennial inspection were to prioritise the structural repairs to the supporting embedded iron ties that were holding the tower structure but resulting ion the fracturing and lifting of masonry due to rust expansion. A careful sequence of temporary works and ties allowed the removal of the iron and replacement with stainless steel. Masonry repairs and pointing were carried out to the magnesian limestone. The cast iron gutters were workshop cleaned, repaired and redecorated then installed with underside lead flashing and drip. The works were undertaken by Gary Payne Masonry, Ripon with Structural and Civil Consultants ltd as consulting engineers.
