HOVINGHAM HALL AND ESTATE

York

Grade I Listed

ROLE:

Specialist Conservation Architect 2001 to present.

THE BUILDING:

Hovingham Hall is an extraordinary and charming Palladian country house located in the centre of the village of Hovingham. It was designed and built by Thomas Worsley IV for himself between 1750 and 1774, Worsley was Surveyor General to the Board of Works 1760-74. The Hall was developed around the stables and riding school, breeding and training horses being a keen interest. The hall and setting are reminiscent of Palladio’s Veneto villas.

PROJECT SCOPE

Chris was first appointed by Sir William Worsley to support on proposals for the Hunting Hall chimney piece and external north drive landscaping in 2001. Since then, Chris has advised on various minor accommodation changes within the Hall. In 2020 Chris led the repair and restoration of the Park Street Gates, following collapse after tree storm damage, a key challenge was ensuring the new stonework blended seamlessly with the old and retained the ancient village character. The masonry was undertaken by Matthias Garn. A recent phase of Village Wall Repairs has required the full renewal of the masonry to the listed wall, reinstating its original character and securing it for future generations; works carried out be Pinnacle Conservation.
