DURHAM CATHEDRAL

The Cathedral Church of Christ, The Blessed Mary and St Cuthbert

Grade 1 Listed, World Heritage Site

ROLE:

Cathedral Architect. 2011 to present.

THE BUILDING:

Durham Cathedral is the defining spiritual emblem of the Northeast of England. Since its post-conquest construction 1093-1133 it has continued to serve, protecting the sacred relics of St Cuthbert, providing the Seat for the Bishops of Durham and supported the service of the wider diocesan cathedral community. Today, it serves the priorities of Encountering God, Pilgrimage, Prayer and Proclamation. It is widely known as the outstanding innovative example of Romanesque architecture, the centrepiece of the World Heritage Site.

PROJECT SCOPE

Design Philosophy: Creating invisible architectural interventions that connect and reveal the awe inspiring ancient architecture of Durham as volumes in light.
As Cathedral Architect Chris led the innovative conservation with environmental work, upgrade and transformation of the claustral buildings to provide the Cathedral Museums including the Monks’ Dormitory and Great Monastic Kitchen exhibitions spaces, displaying the treasures discovered in St Cuthbert’s Feretory and coffin. The NHLF funded project also included the formation of the new Cathedral Shop and Undercroft Restaurant. The Cathedral Libraries were rationalised and measures to establish stable environmental conditions implemented. The installation of the new Nave Lobbies, to reveal the outstanding Romanesque carved portals and manged the doorway environment was the final phase of this project. These projects carried out by Simpson of York and Vest Construction enabled the Claustral buildings to be accessible and useable, facilitating the hospitality and welcome to all who visit.
Chris also led with Dr Alex Holton on the external stonework conservation and repairs to the West Claustral Building, the Great Kitchen and the repairs to the Central Tower Belfry Parapet and associated stonework. Collaboratively developing the skills of the in-house masonry and works teams to care for the buildings to the highest standard.
Chris is currently working with the Cathedral Team and Chapter on the implementation of the next phase of conservation, repair and refurbishment projects.
