ALL SAINTS NORTH STREET, YORK
The Parish and Shrine Church of All Saints with Anchorage, Diocese of York.

Grade 1 Listed
ROLE:
All Saints North Street, York: Architect. 2016 to present
THE BUILDING:
The church of All Saints, North Street has practiced the Anglo-Catholic tradition of worship and liturgy since 1904, with the institution of Rev Patrick Shaw. The building is one of the principal historic buildings in the City of York with an outstanding collection of in-situ stained glass dating from the second quarter of the fourteenth century and the first half of the fifteenth century. Distributed across thirteen windows, they are of exceptional iconographic interest, depicting rare, and in one instance unique, subjects in stained glass. The building is multi-phase, probably originating and founding pre conquest, distinctive for its basilica form and slender tower and spire. It contains an attached Anchorite cell, rebuilt to the designs of Edwin Ridsdale Tate.
PROJECT SCOPE
Design Philosophy: Achieving ecclesiastical ambience and a place for the sacred; care, continuity and creativity in the Anglo-Catholic Tradition.
In close collaboration with the PCC and All Saints project team, Chris directed the NHLF funded project to conserve and restore the collection of mediaeval stained glass. Barley Studios Stained Glass led the workshop conservation of the historic glass, painstakingly working over each square inch to record, stabilise, repair and re-present where necessary. The conserved glass was reinstalled and external protective secondary glazing system installed. This has also had a thermal buffering effect on the interior, reducing heat losses and improving thermal comfort.
With the Rt Revd Glyn Webster, Priest in Charge, and the PCC working group, Chris led the recent reimagining of the interior decoration including the blue painted and gilded star chancel ceiling and the gilding of the chancel screen. The interior was also relit and organ case decorated and instrument repaired. The works also included the installation of new accessible north door and churchyard path. The works were carried out by specialist heritage builder Paul Furniss and Sons Ltd who also made the recently installed refreshments bar.
